As I’ve said before, EmotionUI is a better MIUI. Xiaomi’s UI (MiHome can be used on any ROM) might be more striking, but it has a few bad design decisions that seem to be fixed in Huawei’s EmotionUI (some of them, at least). For a particular reason though, I want to see physically, in a carrier’s store, the Huawei Ascend P6 and the Huawei G700 (technically launched in the Netherlands and in Germany*, but I’m not sure anyone could see any of the EU versions G700-U20 and G700-U10, but only the Chinese G700-U00 WCDMA one — there is also a China-only G700-T00 TDCMA edition).
This is because they both come with EmotionUI 1.6 — Huawei Mate only comes with 1.5. And there are more themes for 1.6 than for 1.5.
And I have one more curiosity: on forums, some people complained that the P6 only comes with a few preinstalled themes, and the promised extra themes are nowhere. I checked in an Orange store with a Mate, and this one too lacked an “Online” tab in Themes. On the other hand, G700-U00 does have the “Online” tab, but it might be slow to browse themes, as it looks like it accesses a Chinese server. LATE EDIT: I’ve checked in a Vodafone store, and the P6 really lacked an “Online” tab in Themes, being stuck with the preinstalled 6 themes. So read below.
Either way, all the themes are here — e.g. 164 themes for the P6. Note that G700 is not selectable, but I know for a fact that P6 themes do work on a G700 device — but not on the Mate, which has its own set of themes, only 96.
To install themes downloaded from that Web server, rename the downloaded ZIP as “.hwt”, and place them in a “HWThemes” on either the internal storage or the SD card, then restart the Themes app. The catch is that you can’t search by names on the Chinese site — English names are only seen on the phones.
My research established that the 3 mentioned devices (P6, G700, Mate) come with different preinstalled themes (typically 7), but at least 2 of them are common to all: “Default” (duh) and “CleanHuawei”. They’re rather dull though, so many people would like to find better themes.
I’ve collected for you (as usual, this is unpaid public service for the humankind) sample screens for a few extravagant themes of possible interest — not with the default “Me” widget, which nobody seems to love, but with a different weather widget. Also, note that the themes also affect the lockscreen (not shown) for when a lock pattern is not used, but each theme can be used with another’s theme lockscreen, wallpaper, etc.
Before getting to Kandinsky, here you have the 2 dull default themes:
Kindinsky (sic!) — really, it’s not Kandinsky! (hey, this is China!):
Pure (P6 has it preinstalled; it comes with 2 wallpapers):
Of course, there are a lot of pinky-ish themes for chicks…
*MSRP (UVP) is 299 € in Germany, but actual prices are 279 € at Conrad, 269 € at Cyberport, 249.90 € at Comtech and Phone House, 240 € at computeruniverse.net, 236-237 € at notebooksbilliger.de.
END-NOVEMBER UPDATE: 10 more themes, with different previews (using other weather widgets), and MediaFire download links (as above), faster than the Chinese server.
