Bonfire / Brasero: the future K3b killer? gnome

Maybe not yet, but it's a good start. Bonfire 0.3.90 is "just another CD/DVD burn application for the GNOME desktop."

To me however, it doesn't look like "just another one", since it was designed with the ease of use in mind, thus making it able to dethrone K3b in the future! (Yes, I know people that use K3b even in GNOME — what a shame, when they have GnomeBaker, Graveman, and of course, Nautilus Burner.)

Ergonomics speaking, its starting screen is more than self-explanatory, and please note that it's even able to preview (GStreamer-based) multimedia files while organizing what to burn!

...and will burn now:

[Download the sources].

Dependencies for bonfire-0.3.90 (corrected):
  • glib-2.0 >= 2.6.0
  • gdk-2.0 >= 2.6.0
  • gtk+-2.0 >= 2.6.0
  • libgnome-2.0 >= 2.10.0
  • libgnomeui-2.0 >= 2.10.0
  • gnome-vfs-2.0 >= 2.14.2
  • gnome-vfs-module-2.0
  • gstreamer-0.10 >= 0.10.6
  • gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10 >= 0.10.0
  • libnautilus-burn >= 2.14.0
  • libxml-2.0 >= 2.6.0
NOTE: Unfortunately, you have to be too on the bleeding edge to be able to compile it! I couldn't satisfy all the dependencies under Debian testing/unstable...

OH, WAIT! After some (reasonable) pain, I was able to compile bonfire-0.3.1 (the previous version, also requiring hal) on Debian:

P.S.: It's also listed on Gnomefiles.

NOTE: Meantime, it changed its name into Brasero.

Hey this one has a very clean interface... very pleasant UI certainly. You know eventho I mostly burn stuff using K3B, when I'm in GNOME I really dig the right click burn iso option that Nautilus gives me. It comes in very handy. (Does it do an md5sum check tho?) Maybe KDE should try to copy that feature.

No, it does not verify md5 sums. And it's less customizable than GnomeBaker and Graveman.
But it's nice, it's well designed, that's why I like it.

It installed fine from the sources on Ubuntu 6.06, using "sudo ./configure" "sudo make" and "sudo make install"
I love it! Thanks for the review!

"./configure && make" do not need root rights. Only "sudo make install" is needed.

It seems that Ubuntu 6.06 and FC6-test1 are privileged, as they have the latest packages.

@madcap: In Konqueror, you can right click on an iso file and from the pop-up menu, choose Actions -> 'Burn iso to CD'

This option should be there unless your distro messed around with it.

Stop killing things please!

On a more serious note:
Bonfire is actually pretty good and I hope it get's somewhere unlike all the other attempts at a burning suite for GNOME.

I am really tired of this aggressive "killing" language everywhere. GNOME and KDE are both free software, it is a win for us if both succeed.

Why do some GNOME fans believe that they can only win by killing everyone else?

If you want to get audience and to get on Digg, you have to use some strong keywords, like "kill -9", "killall", "app killer"... :-)

Some time ago I made packages of Bonfire for Ubuntu Dapper, if some one want to try it they might be useful. You can find them here -> http://usuarios.lycos.es/gabiel/index.html.
