Strange things happening

Miscellanea.

  • Idiocy of the season, part of this comment: “Buntu is starting to become more like Slackware.” It might have been about KDE 3.5 vs. KDE 4.2 in Ubuntu, but stil…
  • Slackware64 is for real! Patrick says so, Alan says so… but apparently it won’t include any 32-bit libs. And it’s only -current and will be 13.0. So Slamd64 and Bluewhite64 are still having a reason to be for a while. Comments on OSNews.com. Anyway, my bet is that pigs will fly before Slackware will come with a Synaptics touchpad driver and a correctly configured xorg.conf for mouse + touchpad. (How about newer Dell laptops that come with both a touchpad and a Thinkpad-like dick, then the user adds a USB mouse?)
  • I like this wallpaper. What’s wrong with me, Doc?
  • Someone praises (in Romanian) screen. Apparently, in Ubuntu 9.04 it got slightly enhanced. UPDATE: Ubuntu Polishes GNU screen.
  • Speaking of Romanians, Ducea is lazy. Nothing new in his CentOS section of the site for more than 2 months.
  • OK, Dell Sticks to Ubuntu 8.04 for Stability, Costs. Lucky them. 8.04 LTS fails to hibernate my Acer (that’s a regression, baby). 8.10 is not a LTS and has other (small?) issues, and 9.04 is cute, but has the huge Intel video failure. Maybe Dell should buy Canonical. Or Canonical to buy Dell.
  • When somebody famous asks about what would be the best laptop (it should work out of the box with Fedora), the Lazyweb answers: ThinkPad T400, Lenovo X300, Thinkpad X200s, Dell M1330. Now, if the question was not about “what works with Fedora”, but what works with RHEL5 or with Lenny…
  • CentOS’ devs have discussed in the first week of May on the possible directions for the LiveCD development. I’m sorry to say, but they were all ridiculous. I thought FLOSS was about cooperation, not about staying in an Ivory Tower. They never considered getting any inspiration from the Scientific Linux LiveCD (release notes; added software; IceWM miniCD that can look like this with additions from here). Are they ignoring Urs Beyerle, or he a “rival” for them?!
  • There is no such thing as “objective anti-virus rankings”, and this article (poorly formatted) just proves why all the AV engines are a FAILURE.
  • Want a $15 “penis phone”? Try Chavez’s Vergatario!
  • Where are you on the Road to Success? (Also here.)
