EL5 repo with GIMP 2.3.15, Nimbus, and more…
…more to come at some point in the future, but for the time being, only a couple of packages for EL5 (built on CentOS 5.3) are available:
- GIMP 2.3.15 (and 2.3.14 as a possible fallback), which don’t require any newer libs than those available in EL5; they might be buggy, yet they’re “almost GIMP 2.4″ (2.3.19 was the last development release); patched against CVE-2006-4519, CVE-2007-2949 and CVE-2007-3741.
- meld 1.3.0 (just because it’s newer than what EPEL offers);
- gtk-nimbus-theme 0.1.2, the latest default theme that comes with OpenSolaris 2009.06; strangely for someone who traditionally likes “flat” themes, I happen to like it: decorations, controls, icons. To match the full 3D flavor that can be lived in OpenSolaris, make the top and bottom gnome-panels of 28 pixels (instead of 24) and select for the background the files top-panel-image.png and bottom-panel-image.png, both from /usr/share/gnome-panel. From the upstream opensolaris-backgrounds-0.7, I’ve also added 2 wallpapers (in /usr/share/backgrounds/images) that don’t include the “opensolaris” word, but only the circles (bubbles?). Note that the GNOME menu also includes the OpenSolaris logo, because I like it and because I don’t know how to remove it and what else to use instead. The themes (Nimbus, Light Nimbus, Dark Nimbus) might still look or behave slightly different in GNOME 2.16 though.
To use this repo, install the file odiecolon.repo under /etc/yum.repos.d. Of course, the packages might ruin your system, kill your cat and make your girlfriend frigid, but don’t say you’ve not been warned.
UPDATE: As the site can’t be browsed, to find and get the SRPMs you need to install yum-utils, then use yumdownloader accordingly (here, just list the URLs):
yumdownloader --source --urls gimp-2.3.14 yumdownloader --source --urls gimp-2.3.15 yumdownloader --source --urls gtk-nimbus-engine

Honestly, the theme is ugly…
:o)
But to each his own…

What?! With all the people *loving* KDE3, OS X, Windows XP, Vista and KDE4, how can they *not* like the Nimbus theme?
Fact is that OpenSolaris 2009.06 has *a lot* of improvements over 2008.05 and 2008.11. So people better get used with its *default* look!

Nimbus is quite alright, imho.
The repo should be browsable now.

I like those icons, either of them:

or
http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/1340
And this theme is nice:

As of the window border, human or clearlooks…

The whole Nimbus thing was mostly about mimicking the look of another OS. It's not a perfect theme, but I liked it. I am sick of Clearlooks etc.
Icons: GNOME-colors is great; Gion is not (the folder icon is vertical like in Vista, which I hate).

Word. Clearlooks looks soooo dated now. Used to use (?) Nimbus too, it's a great combination of functionality and aesthetics. Also check out http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/?content=99642
