Fundamental differences? None. If you're happy with SL, then stay with it: it's an excellent RHEL clone -- with a less inspired artwork than CentOS, if you asked for a difference :-)

thanks :)

but I couldn't do netinstall since I'm behind proxy wall :(
I can mirror the whole repo and then netinstall it from there but it's too much for single pc installation.

I really want to use CentOS but for now I guess I must satisfied with Scientific Linux. Is there any fundamental different between two of them ?

Using SL installed from the LiveCD is not bad for a home or personal laptop use. Otherwise, you'll have to "fix" it to stop making it autologin!

As CentOS doesn't have a 1-CD installer, I have used the Network Install from the GRUB menu of the LiveCD. You can also use the much smaller netinstall disc.

Choose FTP or HTTP, then enter something like that (choose another mirror if you prefer):

Server: mirror.centos.org
CentOS directory: centos/5/os/i386

Make sure the server URL does *not* include "http://" nor "ftp://", and that the CentOS directpry does *not* start, nor end, with "/".

I am now using CentOS on the Acer laptop, but SL with IceWM on the antique HP Omnibook.

Hi beranger,

I'm a long time reader on your blog
I know now you're using CentOS as your Linux of choice, and I think I'm going to use CentOS too because it's long time support and because finally you open a repo dedicated for that :)

Do you have any recomendation for 1 CD CentOS installer ? Right now I'm using Scientific Linux Live CD that installed to harddrive. Is it bad using those method ? any suggestion ?

Thanks

Looks interesting. Pitty it's i386 only, and those desktop looks are in need of a serious overhaul. BTW, the "sluser" login reminds me of that "luser" login joke people played on each other in the old Unix days :D I hope the similarity is mere coincidence ;D
