Firefox, the new KDE4

ffcuit I don’t know whether the new vulnerability found in Firefox 3.5.1 is exploitable or not (hey! but it fixed the one present in 3.5!), but I know two things that matter to me:

  • Firefox 3.5.x is much, much worse than 3.0.x, at least on Windows XP. I thought it was meant to make the browsing a better experience, by isolating each tab in its own process (or thread on Windows?!). I don’t know what it does, but it’s often unresponsive and, what is worse, switching to a tab can freeze the whole Firefox! This is as shitty as it gets, and I’m really, really, really so very disappointed.
  • I have just encountered (on Win32) the strange JS-related behavior of Firefox 3.5.1 described in some other place. Yes, it’s resizing and moving Windows for no apparent reason and no, I wasn’t visiting any of “that kind of” sites!

OK, they have designed and released a piece of shit. (And then we all think of Microsoft when comes to crappy software…) What are they doing to fix that? Nothing. They’re f-ing “designing” Firefox 3.7.

It looks like Firefox is the next KDE4 in terms of quality of the design.

Been using it since release date, but only on Linux (I actually use Windows only 5 % or less of my time). I haven't encountered any problem at all actually. No freezes, no crashes, nothing but a bit better performance.

According to some benchmarks FF on Windows is still a few ms faster than on Linux. How widespread is the stability issues on Windows?

Bay Radule esti mare :-).

I am still on FF 3.x… Feels just fine…

But on all my winXP partitions, I moved to FF 3.5 without issues… Same for customers' PC… I haven't noticed issues…

That said, I haven't been really using FF 3.5… As I don't really use winXP anymore… But my wife is using it all the time… No issues…

I'm quite happy with Firefox 3.5 on Windows at work. It feels faster when using those vendor Java websites, and appears to be using less memory on my 1GB corporate desktop.

But you seem to indicate Firefox 3.5 is already running different tabs in different processes, which is a feature they have just started working on. So I would guess this is something for Firefox 4.

Oh, mea culpa! So FF 3.5 is *not* about the process per tab? Not yet?

Then… WHAT THE FUCK IS THE WHOLE FF 3.5 HYSTERIA ABOUT?!

What the fuck were they celebrating?!??!?!?!

Firefox 3.5.1 is still not in the repos

As I write this, Fedora 11 still does not include Firefox 3.5.1.

Yes, it's in Koji, but grabbing the rpm from Koji goes against the security infrastructure of the Repos.

Yes I can "rpm -Kv " to check the hash against the Firefox from Koji, but I digress.

The fact is, "Average Fedora Users" ( That's another argument for another day ), are still running a version of Firefox with known security vulnerabilities.

I’ve got FF 3.51 installed. (Had to go upstream as VectorLinux still only had 3.5 as of yesterday.) I heard all the hype about how much faster it is. One news site I go to regularly was fine under 3.0.11 but is terribly slow and FF all but hangs under 3.5.1. So much for faster. I don’t buy it.

The Israel Radio Toolbar was fine under 3.0.x It all but hangs FF under 3.5.x.

Time to start looking at other browsers again.
